In Chișinău in Moldova, over 20,000 stray dogs roam the streets and their survival is a daily struggle. These animals face many grim realities such as starvation, exposure to the elements, and even total hostility.

However, in collaboration with our local partner, Doctor Vet Moldova, we believe in a brighter future for these dogs. Together, we have launched a humane and sustainable Dog Population Management programme, aiming to bring new hope to the country's strays.

Renowned activist and photographer Sophie Gamand was deeply moved by the resilience of Chișinău's strays during her first visit with FOUR PAWS in 2023. Her return earlier this year led to the creation of striking portraits that not only capture the faces but also the spirits of these dogs — hopeful, resilient, and full of untold stories.

This collaboration resulted in the unique exhibition titled, 'From Stray to Star', which alongside Sophie’s striking studio portraits, showcases field photographs of stray dogs in their natural environments — on the streets, navigating their challenges, and struggling for survival.

Educational components are also included, helping visitors understand how small behavioral changes can make a significant difference in the lives of these stray populations. This has produced an impact so meaningful that leaders in Chișinău have since expressed their commitment to implement more humane stray dog policies.

We are exceptionally grateful for our local partner Doctor Vet, Sophie Gamand, and the Chișinău Municipality for their dedicated support in making this event possible. The exhibition is showcased at the National Museum of History of Moldova in Chișinău from 15th October to 15th November 2024.

Together, we can work towards a brighter future for Chișinău's stray dogs — a future where they are no longer perceived merely as strays, but as celebrated stars of our community.
