Statement on the Final Report of the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of EU Agriculture

Global animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS welcomes its conclusions

4.9.2024

Vienna, 04 September 2024 – Today, the final report of the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of EU Agriculture was presented to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. It is a first positive commitment to a more sustainable future of agriculture and food safety in the EU. Global animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS welcomes its conclusions.

"A new dawn is breaking for animal welfare, food systems and the future of agriculture in Europe. We wholeheartedly welcome the conclusions, and congratulate all those who have worked to achieve this impressive, unanimously agreed, set of conclusions."

Joe Moran, FOUR PAWS Director in Belgium

He also says: “Not only can we now say with certainty that new farmed animal welfare legislative proposals will finally be brought forward, but that they will fit into a broader landscape of a CAP reform that will support and incentivise farmers as they implement new standards on farms, using public money only for the delivery of public goods. Consumers will be able to help drive the change we know so many wish to see through a new labelling scheme. And there is promising language on food systems per se, including on promoting the consumption of less and better meat.

Crucially, the five-domain model is now also included in the report, which revolutionizes the concept of animal welfare, by moving to an animal-centric model that seeks to ensure every animal can have a good life.

”President von der Leyen’s commitment to bring all parties around the table for this strategic dialogue has paid dividends. We congratulate her and all involved on the final report, and look forward to working with the new EU Commission, MEPs, Member States and other stakeholders to making this report a reality”, says Moran.
